Goals

I recently posted this picture on my social media and a dear friend suggested that I share its importance and relevance on my blog, so here is goes…

Not only is this a perfect example of my type A personality, it is a HUGE motivator for me to reach my #1 micro goal this year- to run 500 miles in 2019. I call it a “micro” goal, because it is a stepping stone for my ultimate goal of running a marathon.

Running has been the bane of my existence for as long as I can remember. I have always had a difficult time with breathing while running and I always just gave up.

Recently I realized that I AM DONE GIVING UP! It doesn’t matter how slow I go, as long as I don’t stop. So, I downloaded the 13.1 app on my phone (I’ll be downloading the 26.2 app when i am done with this one!) and I run 4-5 days per week. I have found something that works for me! This app breaks down the runs into intervals that gradually get longer over time so I am easing into the deep end.

Regardless of how I’m doing it, I AM DOING IT! I get excited about coming home and running on my run days! ME!!!! ๐Ÿ˜ณ And I haven’t died during any runs…yet! But seriously, folks, if I can do it, what the hell is your excuse??

What is your #1 goal (fitness, work, nutrition, personal…whatever!)?

What 3 micro goals do you need to reach to get there?

Now, find what works for YOU and go after it! Run, walk, crawl if you must, but don’t stop!

And find a way to visually track your progress- you’ll be surprised how motivating it is!

Now GO, scoot, get out there and make those goals your bitch!

Many Changes

I realize it has been an insanely long time since I have posted and Iโ€™d say Iโ€™m sorry, but youโ€™ll soon realize why Iโ€™m really not.

At the end of last school year I made the mixed-emotion-filled decision to leave my position for another position teaching K-3rd grade students in another town nearby. With this change came a lot of learning and personal growth. I have learned to fall completely in love with my job again, and in turn, with myself again too.

2017 was a very turmultuous year to say the least and I am still healing from it in many ways. The beginning of 2018 was better, but still quite challenging and emotional for me. Then, after learning that I got a new job, I broke my dominant wrist. Between the frustration, the pain, and determining that I had been prescribed too many pain medications without being taught how to detox from them, I decided that enough was enough and I needed to start taking care of me…I mean REALLY taking care of me!

Now, I listen to podcasts, read self-help books, bullet journal (my new addiction), go to dinner with the women in my family once a month and meet with an amazing group of self-empowered women once a month. I am back to regularly scheduling time to work out and I feel great- most days.

As my first post in a while, I want to keep this short and sweet. I wanted to let you all know that we all falter and sway, but itโ€™s ok to fall down 7 times as long as you stand up 8!

Enjoy your day doing whatever it is that sets your soul on fire!

The Exercise Lie

Rachel Hollis wrote a book called Girl, Wash Your Face and I have recently read it and am taking much of what she says as my new reality. In short, if you haven’t read it, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR???

Anyway, she talks about the lies we tell yourselves every day and it got me thinking about the lies I tell myself all the time. One of these lies is that people who work out regularly both love every minute of it AND it comes easy to them.

I have lived believing this for so long and it made me feel completely inept in the fitness area of my life. I felt that something was wrong with me and that I must not be made to be someone who is “into” exercise in a hard core way.

Today, as I was going for a 5 mile walk, I began to think of this belief AS a lie and it made me finally feel comfortable in my own skin. Let’s face it, exercise is a mind-f*** every time you do it. You convince yourself to get up off the couch and begin. Then you convince yourself to keep going…even when you have sweat in places it truly shouldn’t be!

Today I had to literally kick my own ass off of the couch and get going. I said, “What if I do the 5 mile hilly loop that I haven’t done in a year?” As I began, I realized it was hotter than hades and I was already pouring sweat from everywhere! Then I realized I was only 1/4 of a mile in! I began to rationalize at that point: “I can just go to the end of the road- 2.2 miles is good for a hot day.” But then I thought, “What if I pushed myself a little more and walked up the hill that comes right after the end of the street?”

After each milestone I kept asking myself “What if” until I got to the point of “What if I didn’t give up and I kept on going?”

You see, in all aspects of our life (exercise, work, relationships, parenting…) we have hills and milestones that we have to climb over and work hard to overcome. It can feel overwhelming and almost impossible at times…but if you ask yourself “What if…”

The Hill, obstacle or milestone will soon be a thing of the past and you will be so much stronger for having experienced it.

I am learning to self talk my way past the lie that other find things easier or that they loved every second of their journey…we all struggle and challenge ourselves every day. If we didn’t challenge ourselves, we wouldn’t grow to the the badass, beautiful, unstoppable souls that we were meant to be!

Whatโ€™s Your Excuse?

I used to have every excuse in the book to put off getting stuff done…homework, workouts, housework…you name it! My favorite two lines were “It’s too…” or “I’ll just…”

The truth is: you can always have a reason NOT to do something, but the reasons TO do it are far greater! First of all, if you do it, it’s done and over with…seems pretty logical.

Today was SO hot and humid but I made a promise to myself to workout every day this week so I put my big girl pants on and did it. I am currently melting in front of a fan as I type this, but IT’S DONE!!

I didn’t want to do laundry because doing laundry means FOLDING AND PUTTING AWAY laundry ๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿฝ! BUT I am currently washing the laundry and I WILL fold and put it away.

Don’t let your excuses block you from your goals. Get up, get going, get it done, and give yourself a pat on the back and relax because it’s DONE!

You’re too strong to let your excuses get in the way.

It’s just as easy as taking that first step.

Now, what are you waiting for…get going!!

Keeping motivated while enjoying the down time

Itโ€™s been a long time…too long…since Iโ€™ve posted last. Between wrapping up the end of the school year, getting some upsetting news and realigning my thinking to accept that news, I did not feel like I was in the right frame of mind to post here, but then I realized if I canโ€™t air my feelings here, where can I? So, here I am, back in the swing of things!

So far this summer I have gone kayaking several times with my family. This is my new favorite way to decompress. I am gettting a fantastic arm workout while spending time with my family away from electronics and just enjoying nature.

I have also gone to Nantucket with my husband, his parents and some other friends. It was a long, but relaxing, day and although shopping would have been expensive there, it was still nice to walk around and browse the shops.

I have also been taking an online course for PDPs for my license and reading by the pool whenever possible. Lately, though, I have been talking with a group of amazing women who have been helping keep me motivated to get my 10,000 steps per day in! While we all come from different walks of life and we all have different goals, we have all been motivating each other to reach those goals each day.

Right now, well after I post this, I am getting in a sweaty workout before going to dinner with friends and my husband. I hope you are all finding different ways to enjoy your summer while staying focused on your goals…itโ€™s all about balance, people!

Where Are My Fellow Educators?? ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

We are SO close to the end of the year! Woohoo!!

How many are feeling the school year burn-out? ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

Yea, me too! I am exhausted at the end of the day, I feel my fuse is a bit shorter (even if I don’t show it) and I am mentally in summer mode!

I found something to help me through the last 3 weeks that does not include mid-week drinking! ๐Ÿคฃ

First, whenever I have a free moment during the day (before school, during my prep, after I eat lunch, after school) I do some laps around my classroom to get my blood pumping…it also encourages me to straighten up things here and there each time I pass by.

Then, when I get home, I found this gem on Pinterest :

It took me 15-20 minutes with no rests, and I could modify it to make it easier or harder as needed….and what’s better….I need ZERO equipment!

Finally, I took a mind-clearing walk while my daughter was at soccer practice. It ended up being good for my physical health (I reached my 10,000 step goal!) and good for my mental health (I was able to decompress and clear my head) too!

Find ways to take care of YOU during these last few weeks (or borrow my ideas)…and you’ll be lounging around in no time!

Count Your Blessings

Today, when I got home from work, I decided to walk the track while my daughter was at soccer practice. I needed to clear my head and gain some perspective after an emotionally trying day.

While people complain about their kids playing too many video games (guilty ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ), not cleaning up after themselves (๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ), not giving the “perfect” Mother’s Day gift, or any other number of things we, as parents, whine about…there are children…CHILDREN…who are on hospice, homeless, in residential programs, in foster care, or struggling with the weight of the world that has become so hard to bare that they crumble.

As a mother, teacher, and all around advocate for children of all types…please, PLEASE count your blessings each day and be kind to everyone…you don’t know what cross they may bare.

And if you ARE one of these people or know of these people, please know that you are stronger than you think and so many of us are here for you.

You don’t have to navigate this world alone.

To those of you still reading, I challenge you to spread kindness everywhere you go. Do 3 random acts of kindness and simply ask that they pass it on to 3 more people. Hopefully you will touch a person who needs it the most at just the right time.

Thank you for reading one of my more serious, but incredibly needed, posts.

Have a wonderful night and God bless!
